Overview

Beginning May 30, 2020, all Zoom clients must be on 5.0+ in order to join any meeting, as GCM Encryption will be fully enabled for all Zoom meetings. This also applies to Zoom Rooms.

1. You can update now via our Download Center. Please also see our how to video.
   or
2. You will be prompted to update when joining a meeting after May 30, 2020. When prompted, follow the instructions provided.

Having Issues?

Quick Fixes

1. For users on Mac, if you are prompted to enter an administrator's name and password during the update, please use your device's administrative username and password.
2. If the update fails or an error code is displayed, please uninstall the old app, download and install the new 5.0 app.
3. If you are unable to update due to IT or security restrictions, please use the Web client or mobile app on iOS or Android to join the meeting and update later.
4. If you are still having issues, please contact us for further assistance.

Frequently asked questions

What if I can't update by May 30? 
If you are unable to update to client version 5.0 by May 30, you will be able to join your meeting from the web client or mobile app on iOS or Android. The web client offers many of the same meeting and webinar features as the desktop client and mobile app. 

What is GCM?
GCM (Galois/Counter Mode) is an authenticated encryption algorithm that provides data integrity in addition to confidentiality and is widely used for its performance. Zoom has moved from AES-256 encryption using ECB to AES-256-GCM in meetings.

How will this effect Zoom for Government customers?
Customers on Zoom for Government will have the same experience, receiving a prompt to upgrade or joining from their web browser if their Zoom client is managed by an internal IT team.

Do I need to be a paid user to have GCM encryption?
No, all accounts will use GCM encryption once enabled on May 30. 

Do I need to make any other changes?
No, once you update Zoom, you can continue joining Zoom meeting and webinars like usual.

Can I opt out of GCM?
No, this is a required change for all accounts on the Zoom backend.

How will this affect users who dial into my meetings by phone?
Users can continue to dial into meetings by phone for audio without any additional changes.

How will this affect my Zoom Rooms?
Zoom Rooms also need to be updated for version 5.0 or later. Administrators can upgrade Zoom Rooms using the Zoom admin portal. See the full instructions.

My company has not upgraded Zoom Rooms and now I am unable to join the meetings. What are my options?
Zoom Rooms must be upgraded by your administrator in order to join GCM meetings. You can join the meeting on your personal device (laptop or mobile) using your Zoom desktop client, mobile app, or the web client.

How will this affect my Conference Room Connector (CRC) rooms?
Zoom Conference Room Connector (CRC) rooms will not require any action as this change does not impact 3rd party device encryption. Zoom is upgrading the cloud-hosted room connector to ensure compatibility with all GCM meetings by May 3rd.

How will this affect my on-premise devices?
Customers leveraging self-hosted room or recording connectors will need to upgrade the server software to the new versions prior to May 30. Also note that from May 30, Zoom will no longer support legacy Meeting Connector released prior to September 2019. The minimum supported version of Meeting Connector will be 4.5.201900.0926

I received the message “Your Zoom application is being managed by your IT administrator. Please contact your IT administrator to request an update.” How can I update?

• If your Zoom application was installed by your organization’s IT Group, you will need to contact them to update the Zoom Application.
• If you installed the IT installer by mistake, please install the standard version of Zoom from our Download Center.
• If you are an IT Administrator, and are trying to update your client or your users, we recommend removing the application and redeploying using the latest IT Installer.
